It is possible that if we see the word cognates in English, we won´t  know what it stands for.  However, everybody has heard about false friends, haven´t you?  That´s it, they are words in English and Spanish that share a similar meaning, spelling or pronunciation , called true friends, but  they can also have similar spelling or pronunciation and a different meaning, false friends. The use of cognates can be very useful  in a foreign language, although it can be very embarrassing ( embarazoso, no embarazado) as well. Can you imagine yourself having a cold and popping into a pharmacy for some medicine because you are constipated ? Do you know what you´d get?  Guess!!!  Have a cold (tener un resfriado) Be constipated (estar estreñido)
